With World Cup fever upon us….and with 1990 twenty four years ago, and agreeably retro, the spirit of ’90 is back with a vengence. What started out as a trickle has turned into a torrent that by the end of the summer with feel like overkill. So, if you cant beat them…join them….dust off your cagools, slap on you cKb and start buying Loaded again. For a while there has been a slow but definate shift around these parts (Shoreditch/Dalston), away from the skater streetwear and towards a more American Vintage Workwear vibe. Any notion of any Brit centric clobber was scarce if not non exstant. But all that is defiantly changing. Just today in an upmarket unamed store on Hanbry St, the owner told me that he had worn his Barracuta Jacket for the first time in ages. To give credit where it is due, for me, its started in 2012 with the Umbro x Palace Skate Crew collab. Spot on. I really really wanted the Blue Top…but just couldnt afford it!! This video epitomises the feel in a big way. Spot on.
As the afore mentioned World Cup looms…the next brick in the puzzle comes hurtelling into view…Panini Sticker albums. By 1994 they had kind of had there day. But they are everywhere for this World Cup. Just check out
this piece by Auntie that says it all. Finally…the clobber is back, and back with a bang, and there is nothing more ’90 than the bucket hat. I’m thinking Scousers at the ’89 cup final, Mad for it Madchester and just general late 80’s/90’s lad culture. To help you all out I’ve complied my list of the top 5 bucket hats for the summer.
1. Stussy Flags Bucket Hat
Just a great all round hat. The shape is spot on and the colour ways and patterns are perfect. Admittedly its not for everybody. The pattern is strong and it takes a big personality to pull it off….but if you can, you’ll be a don. Find it at the ever cool Urban Excess
2. North Face Sun Stash
They may call it a sun stash, claiming that it will provide protection from the sun … but lets get real…it’s England, its going to rain!! Either way this reversable bucket gives you twice the options, and is a safer alternative to the Stussy one above. Get it straight from source here
3. Dickies Elsinor Hat
Whats this all about I hear. I thought this blog was about the return of lad culture…not classic American workwear. Whilst its true Dickies is as true USA as a Bald Eagle…this hat is just to ggod to miss out on. Avaliable from Urban Industry (What is it with all the Urban??!!). Great online store, fantastic brand list.
4. Fila Reversable Bucket
Just a classic terrace brand and a classic hat. Purchase from Scotts – Now SOLD OUT (Along with lots of other good stuff)
5. Own Club/Country Hat
I bought mine last week at the match…and it’s hardly been off my head since!!
So we are all agreed ….. the bucket hat is back, and glad we all are for that too. For more on the history of the hat, check out this blog on Complex
